Families

Many parents and carers feel isolated, overwhelmed or uncertain about how best to support their children, especially when traditional parenting approaches don’t seem to work. At Luminous Minds Therapy, our work with families is designed to strengthen relationships, improve communication and foster greater understanding between parents/carers and children.

Family therapy can help to:

  • Increase your understanding of your child's emotional and behavioural needs
  • Build confidence and clarity in your parenting or caregiving approach
  • Strengthen the attachment bond between you and your child/ren
  • Support you in managing difficult moments with more connection and less conflict
  • Help adult children and parents navigate complex mental health and relationship challenges
  • Improve communication patterns to foster greater understanding, empathy and cooperation within the family

We aim to create a non-judgemental, supportive space where families can explore what’s really happening beneath the surface and find new ways forward.

Our family work is flexible and responsive. We work with individuals, dyads (parent and child) or whole families to create space for understanding, healing and connection.

We meet families where they are, offering support to:

  • Parents and carers of children with attachment or emotional regulation difficulties.
  • Families adjusting to complex relational dynamics, including after trauma or separation.
  • Parents of adult children with ongoing mental health challenges.
  • Individual parents seeking support in their parenting role.

We draw on a range of therapeutic and evidence-informed interventions, including:

Theraplay-Informed Practice: Play-based, relationship-focused sessions to build trust, safety and connection

Attachment Focused Therapy: A trauma-informed, relational approach that supports parents and carers to respond to their child’s needs with greater sensitivity and understanding, aiming to strengthen the attachment bond and improve co-regulation

EMDR and Trauma-informed Practice: Trauma can affect the whole family system, requiring tailored support to process through EMDR

Parenting Support and Psychoeducation: Centred around attachment theory and how it relates to day-to-day parenting

Whether you're a parent of a young child struggling with emotional or behavioural needs, a carer supporting a child with a history of trauma or even a parent of an adult child living with mental health difficulties, you're not alone. You don’t have to navigate these challenges in isolation.

If you're looking specifically for support related to adoption, we have a dedicated page for that [here].
