Adoption, Fostering and SGO
At Luminous Minds Therapy, we provide therapeutic support for children, families and adults whose lives have been shaped by adoption, fostering or Special Guardianship Orders (SGOs). We understand the unique challenges and emotions that come with these experiences, including early trauma and attachment disruptions, identity, grief and family relationships.
Our work is grounded in compassion, expertise and an understanding of how early experiences continue to shape lives well into the future.
Who we support:
- Adopted Children and Adolescents
- Children and Young People under SGOs
- Adoptive parents, Foster Carers and Special Guardians
- Adult Adoptees
- Birth parents affected by the loss of a child through adoption
We are OFSTED registered and able to deliver therapy through the Adoption Support Fund (ASF) where eligible.
Our approach is attachment-informed and trauma-sensitive, using a range of therapies to meet each family’s needs, including:
Attachment Focused Therapy (AFT): AFT helps adoptive and SGO parents respond to their child’s behaviour through a lens of attachment and trauma. Rather than focusing on changing the child, AFT supports parents to build trust, increase connection and create emotional safety. This work may include in-home support.
Therapy for Children and Adolescents: We offer age-appropriate, creative therapies to help children process difficult emotions and experiences. These include play and creative therapy, psychotherapy, EMDR for trauma and ‘My Life’ narrative work.
Counselling for Adult Adoptees: A safe, non-judgemental space to explore identity, relationships and the emotional impact of adoption in adulthood.
Support for Birth Parents: We offer compassionate counselling for birth parents living with the grief and complexity of having a child adopted, including support around ongoing or post-adoption contact.
Caring for children with complex attachment needs can be deeply isolating. We’re here to offer not just therapy, but understanding, helping carers, parents and children feel seen, supported and more connected.
We provide face-to-face and online sessions, and we work in collaboration with schools, social workers and other professionals.
